The commercial herd is made up of mostly Black Angus and Hereford X cows. Only quality
Hereford and
Angus sires are used to produce a quality BWF calf. Calving begins early May, the cows are put out on a ridge field with natural shelter and are expected to do it all themselves.
Depending on seeding, cattle are checked one to two times a day. By using quality bulls and hard culling, birth to weaning calf survival rate is always 95% and higher. The cows are wintered on a ration of mainly straw, with only enough grain and a little hay for protein when needed.
